This perfectly describes Chicago-born writer and singer Patti Smith. Her influence has extended to fans and listeners alike. While Patricia sought inspiration for her work, she unknowingly became a source of inspiration for others, reports chicago1.one.

Childhood and Youth

Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago. From a young age, she showed a love for music. She sang beautifully, a talent nurtured by her mother, Beverly, who worked as a singer and waitress. Her father, Grant, worked in a factory. Patti wasn’t an only child; she had two other siblings. The Smiths lived in Chicago until 1949, when they moved to the small town of Woodbury.

Patti grew up as a reserved child, preferring solitude, which often led to misunderstandings with her classmates. After school, she would read books and listen to music. Her favorite writer was Henry Kuttner, and her favorite performer was Jimi Hendrix. Eventually, she became interested in Beat culture and studied literature of that genre.

After high school, Patricia enrolled in college in Glassboro, but her plans were interrupted by an unexpected pregnancy. After giving up the child for adoption, she refocused on other aspirations. She dreamed of getting a job, saving money, and making it in New York. In 1967, she managed to make that dream a reality.

In Search of Herself

The budding writer found a job at a bookstore. It was here that she had a fateful meeting with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Despite his non-traditional orientation, they soon began a romantic relationship. After a few years, Patti moved to Paris, where she lived for two years, making a living by performing while studying visual arts.

Back in New York, Patricia resumed living with Mapplethorpe and pursued a career in drama and poetry. A pivotal moment was her meeting with Lenny Kaye. After discussing music, they decided to start a joint project. Patti recited poetry while Lenny played the guitar. The duo quickly found success, gradually establishing a presence on the music scene.

In 1974, Richard Sohl joined Smith and Kaye, forming a trio known as the “Patti Smith Group.” Soon, they released their first song, “Electric Lady.” Over time, the group grew, and in 1975, their first album was released to enthusiastic fan reception. The album’s success led to a tour across the U.S. and Europe. In 1976, they released their second album, Radio Ethiopia.

1979 was a momentous year for Patti. She released a new album, Wave, and met Fred “Sonic” Smith, guitarist of the MC5 band, sparking a romantic relationship. However, tough times were ahead for her band as interest in punk subculture waned, and in 1980, the group disbanded.

More Than a Singer: A Poet

In 1977, Smith created the poetry collection Babel, a work that reflected her personal experiences, both in poetry and prose. In 2010, she published her book Just Kids, dedicated to her former lover, Mapplethorpe.

In 2011, she began writing M Train, which was published five years later. Her analysis of the phenomenon of inspiration is woven into her work on Devotion: Year of the Monkey, where Patti recounts a journey across America as a 70-year-old writer.

Her book Year of the Monkey, which recalled her childhood and explored the journey of a young girl discovering an exciting yet frightening world, was also well-received.

It is worth noting that the first editions of Smith’s books, available at the Passages bookstore in Portland, were stolen. In response, Patti donated several signed copies of the first edition to the store’s management.

A woman in rock music is both a striking and beautiful phenomenon, even more so when her persona embodies creativity and is considered an icon of the genre.
