His birth was part of the story of one of the most distinguished business dynasties in the United States — the Pritzker family, renowned for creating the “Hyatt Hotels Corporation” and establishing the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. Jay Robert grew up in an environment where business, strategic thinking and philanthropy were part of the family’s DNA. His father, Donald Pritzker, was the president of “Hyatt” and actively built the brand until his premature death in 1972. Jay Robert was primarily raised by his mother, an activist and philanthropist who instilled in him a love for public service.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Duke University, Pritzker went on to study at Northwestern University School of Law, where he earned a law degree. Instead of focusing exclusively on the family’s assets, he decided to found the “Pritzker Group” — an investment company that focused on venture capital, technology, manufacturing and small business development.

Pritzker was particularly proud of his contribution to creating an innovative space in Chicago: a startup incubator that became a catalyst for the city’s technological breakthrough and a platform for thousands of entrepreneurs. His idea was simple: to create an accessible, open space for sharing knowledge, collaboration and generating ideas.

Business Ventures

In the 1990s, Pritzker established the “Pritzker Group” — an investment firm specialising in venture capital, private equity and asset management. In partnership with his brother Tony Pritzker, he built a structure that enabled them to invest in companies at an early stage, supporting innovative technologies, industrial enterprises and consumer brands.

The “Pritzker Group” was distinguished by its philosophy: it wasn’t a short-term venture fund but a long-term investor that wasn’t looking for quick profits. Instead, it was building companies for the long haul. This approach allowed the group to partner with hundreds of projects in healthcare, technology, the chemical industry, artificial intelligence and e-commerce. The companies the group invested in included SpaceX, ThoughtWorks, Clinical Innovations, PEAK6 and numerous local startups from the American Midwest.

Prior to his political career, Pritzker also played a role in the structure of the “Hyatt Hotels Corporation,” one of the world’s largest hotel chains, founded by his relatives. While he did not hold executive positions at the company, he owned a significant stake and was on the boards of related entities.

Pritzker has repeatedly stated that business should be not only profitable but also responsible. In many interviews, he has stressed that capital should serve the long-term development of the communities it operates in.

According to “Forbes,” his wealth is estimated at approximately $3.6 billion USD, making him the wealthiest serving politician in the US and one of the richest officials in the country’s history.

Jay Robert Pritzker actively supports numerous charitable initiatives, particularly in education, healthcare and the arts. He continues the traditions of the Pritzker family, who have been known for over a century not only as successful businessmen but also as philanthropists who have invested significant resources in the development of society. Pritzker has personally founded several funds and programmes aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs, providing education for the underprivileged and developing cultural projects in Chicago and the state of Illinois.

He also focuses on environmental sustainability. On his initiative, Illinois began implementing projects on renewable energy, emission reduction and the preservation of natural resources, making the state an example of environmentally responsible policy.

Political Career

Although Jay Robert Pritzker remained primarily a businessman and philanthropist for decades, his interest in politics gradually matured. Back in 2008, he actively supported Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, with whom he had shared Chicago ties, and in 2016, he became a delegate for the Democratic Party. However, his real political breakthrough occurred in 2018 when Pritzker decided to run for governor of Illinois — one of the most populous and financially complex states in the US.

His campaign became one of the most expensive in US history, with Pritzker spending over $171 million of his own money. Thanks to a massive media presence, aggressive branding and a wide network of volunteers, he won a convincing victory over the incumbent Republican governor, Bruce Rauner, who was criticised for budget crises, payment delays and failed social programmes. Pritzker’s victory symbolised not only the return of the Democrats to power in Illinois but also the state’s shift towards social liberalism.

As governor, he immediately launched large-scale reforms, focusing on economic growth, social justice and human rights. His key initiatives include:

raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour — a gradual change, but one of the first decisions to demonstrate a commitment to the needs of employees;

criminal justice reform, which included the abolition of cash bail (a principle that discriminates against poorer defendants) and improvements to prison conditions and the probation system;

introducing stricter laws on firearms control, including a ban on the sale of semi-automatic weapons and restrictions on the capacity of magazines;

legalisation of recreational cannabis from 1 January 2020, which brought the state hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, part of which has been used to invest in communities affected by the “war on drugs”;

protecting women’s reproductive rights — Illinois became one of the first states to legally guarantee access to abortions at a level higher than the federal standard.

Road Reconstruction

In addition to his progressive social policies, Pritzker also initiated the “Rebuild Illinois” infrastructure plan — a programme worth over $45 billion, aimed at the reconstruction of roads and bridges. “Rebuild Illinois” not only modernised the state’s physical infrastructure but also created tens of thousands of jobs, especially in regions that had suffered from economic decline for decades. Pritzker insisted that investing in infrastructure is not just about repairing roads but about investing in the future of the economy, the growth of small businesses and the mobility of communities.

Jay Robert Pritzker’s leadership qualities were particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike some governors in other states, he responded to the threat promptly: he introduced lockdown restrictions back in March 2020, organised large-scale testing and vaccination of the population and arranged for the direct purchase of medical equipment from China, bypassing federal bureaucracy.

He’s not just a name on the “Forbes” list of billionaires.
