Vernon Military and Classical Academy. In its early years, the school functioned as a private commercial enterprise owned by the principal. Students paid for more than just tuition; fees covered room, board, uniforms, and general maintenance. This business model was a common standard for American educational institutions in the late 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1877, the school was renamed Morgan Park Military Academy, and between 1890 and 1892, it briefly operated as the Illinois Military Academy. William Rainey Harper, the first president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago1.one\/en\/eternal\/history-of-the-university-of-chicago-1945\">University of Chicago<\/a>, initiated a merger between the school and the newly established Owen Academy. The land was acquired, operations were centralized at the current location, and the school was renamed Morgan Park Academy of the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this era, the school became a secular, integrated preparatory wing of the university. Students were specifically groomed for admission to UChicago, and the faculty were considered part of the university\u2019s academic staff. This period notably included legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, who served as the university\u2019s head football coach while overseeing athletic interests at the Academy. During this difficult economic era, the school established a junior college and opened summer courses to students from Chicago\u2019s public and parochial schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most radical changes arrived in 1958 when the school officially dropped its military designation and adopted its current name, Morgan Park Academy. By 1959, the school returned to a co-educational model, and the boarding program was phased out over the following decade. The Lower School, covering preschool through fifth grade, focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, and fostering a creative approach to learning. Significant emphasis is placed on the fine arts, drama, and the seamless integration of classroom technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Middle School focuses on building independent study habits and interdisciplinary thinking. Students explore the humanities, sciences, arts, world languages, and technology. A robust mentorship system plays a vital role here, helping students integrate into the academic community while developing social and leadership skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Upper School serves as the final stage of college preparation. Students have access to three levels of academic rigor, including Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Morgan Park Academy offers 13 AP courses and encourages students to dive into scientific, artistic, and leadership initiatives. Students consistently earn accolades in regional and national competitions, such as Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and the Rube Goldberg Challenge. Competing as the Warriors, the school\u2019s teams participate in interscholastic sports within the Independent School League and the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students compete in basketball, soccer, cross country, baseball, volleyball, and tennis. The school has a history of high-level state performance, including top finishes in golf, soccer, and track and field. While the football program is no longer active, it was the sport that initially brought Morgan Park Academy widespread recognition in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Morgan Park Academy stands as a model of educational continuity, successfully balancing tradition with academic innovation and inclusivity.
