The Founding of the Academy
The institution was founded in 1873 as Mt. Vernon Military and Classical Academy. In its early years, the school functioned as a private commercial enterprise owned by the principal. Students paid for more than just tuition; fees covered room, board, uniforms, and general maintenance. This business model was a common standard for American educational institutions in the late 19th century.
In 1877, the school was renamed Morgan Park Military Academy, and between 1890 and 1892, it briefly operated as the Illinois Military Academy. While military discipline and a classical education remained the pillars of the curriculum, upcoming events would soon shift the institution’s trajectory.
The University of Chicago Connection
A defining chapter in the Academy’s history began in 1892. William Rainey Harper, the first president of the University of Chicago, initiated a merger between the school and the newly established Owen Academy. The land was acquired, operations were centralized at the current location, and the school was renamed Morgan Park Academy of the University of Chicago.
During this era, the school became a secular, integrated preparatory wing of the university. Students were specifically groomed for admission to UChicago, and the faculty were considered part of the university’s academic staff. This period notably included legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, who served as the university’s head football coach while overseeing athletic interests at the Academy. In 1906, the University of Chicago severed official ties, and the school reverted to its status as a boys’ military academy.
20th Century Transformations
Morgan Park Academy didn’t just survive the Great Depression; it expanded. During this difficult economic era, the school established a junior college and opened summer courses to students from Chicago’s public and parochial schools.
The most radical changes arrived in 1958 when the school officially dropped its military designation and adopted its current name, Morgan Park Academy. By 1959, the school returned to a co-educational model, and the boarding program was phased out over the following decade. This transition solidified MPA’s identity as a modern, independent college-preparatory school.

The academic model at Morgan Park Academy is designed around progressive development. The Lower School, covering preschool through fifth grade, focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, and fostering a creative approach to learning. Athletic Programs
Athletics are a core component of the culture at Morgan Park Academy. Competing as the Warriors, the school’s teams participate in interscholastic sports within the Independent School League and the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).
Students compete in basketball, soccer, cross country, baseball, volleyball, and tennis. The school has a history of high-level state performance, including top finishes in golf, soccer, and track and field. While the football program is no longer active, it was the sport that initially brought Morgan Park Academy widespread recognition in the early 20th century.
